Building character
Many writers have problems bringing their characters to life, particularly central protagonists. This course will examine why this occurs and offer remedies. It will explore typical aspects of writing memorable characters – strengths, flaws, idiosyncrasies and arc. Afterwards, we will move on to building character-based scenes using conflict, both internal and external, and explore the differing functions of dialogue, action, description and reaction. Then we will examine how one scene affects the whole and see how to weave backwards or forwards to link a scene to a longer piece. Offered in 2025.
Story pacing
Rarely offered workshop on pacing which analyses page count-to-action; the relationship of dialogue and action to description, reflection, and texture; the importance of peaks and valleys; framing with time; creating, maintaining, and charting tension/conflict; and horizontal vs vertical reading. Coming in 2025.
Structuring the novel
Story structure in the novel emphasises form rather than format and is a great tool to propel the writer to complete longer works. This 8-week workshop includes act structures, plot and character arcs, character, theme, dialogue/action/reaction, the shape of the subplot, description/reflection, the middle novel soufflé, climax, resolution. Contact The Write Place for further details. Jan 2025.
Creating texture and depth
This course is for those who wish to work on creating weight in the novel. It is aimed at writers who tend to shy away from or have difficulty with description, have not knitted in theme and symbolic content, or wish to find ways of making connections or exploring narrative structures that support the theme of the work (example circular structures for themes about the cycle of life). Introduction to methods such as the one-inch square, keyhole moments, the law of three, symbolism, repetitive motifs. It is particularly relevant to those who want their descriptive passages to 'shine'. Offered in 2025.
